Once upon a time...
Four little words.
Tingly feels.
We know what’s coming.
We settle in.
We fix our attention and we pause, waiting, expecting to be entertained, uplifted, amused, connected, relieved, touched, motivated, even challenged.
Story is a human need. It’s how generations pass down their wisdom. It’s how cultures can translate. It’s how nations find commonality and realise they can be allies not enemies. It’s how individuals relate and know they are not alone, outsiders, outcasts.
We need story.
We all have stories, experiences, a life lived.
Story is your uniqueness.
And it’s the very thing that will connect you as a writer to them as readers.
Readers are seeking to see themselves in you. That’s how they know they can trust you. And why they should stick around. It’s how they identify that you have something for you.
Plus, stories are the interesting bit. Information, data, trends, they’re not all they’re cracked up to be. They’re not entertaining. They’re useful, of course, and they’re conversation starters. Yet information is meaningless unless interpreted and applied. Applied to your life, your direction, your journey, your story.
Convinced yet?
You should be!
Because when is the last time you finished a book that had no stories in?
For your book, you’ll need to share stories for the reader to be able to interpret your data.
So help me out here...
What stories led you to your book?
This may not be elaborate. A story can be a life-changing epic adventure, or a cool moment in time, a precious realisation, a split second where lots of random ideas fell into place as a bigger picture.
Do you remember the story of the day you came up with this book?
Do you have a story about the time you were at your worst?
Do you have a story that led you to realise that other people had the same problem as you?
Do you have a story about your turning point?
Do you have stories about what it’s like on the other side now that you know what you know?
Pinpoint how you know your wisdom.
Because we are storied beings. And every real writer knows this.
