In this feature, I talk to Adam Barralet, one of Australia's premier spiritual teachers, whose observations of Mother Nature began in childhood.
His book Gifts of the Essential Oils, co-authored with Vanessa Jean, guides you to know and understand the plants and trees who share this planet. It dives deep into the magic of the botanicals that gift us their essential oils.
Read or watch my interview with Adam, where he talks about enjoyment and a unique creative process.
Adam and his co-author Vanessa Jean wrote Gifts of the Essential Oils as a sort of consolidation of the methods and approach to essential oils that they already teach in classes and workshops.
Adam and Vanessa Jean found that as they travelled and taught this way of using essential oils, they frequently received feedback from clients that their way of looking at essential oils was unique. They were told many times, “You should write a book!” and so...
After hearing this over and over, they realised there was a real gap in the market and decided to go ahead and write the book together.
What was the problem?
While Adam and Vanessa Jean had all the knowledge they needed to write the book, they ran into some challenges when it came to the co-authoring process.
They each brought a different writing voice and style to the book, and they each had different strengths as they were going through the manuscript creation process.
Most of all, Vanessa Jean didn't like sitting in front of the computer to write.
A bit of a hindrance? So you might think...
What did they do?
Turns out, this was actually a blessing, because they had to get creative.
And going with the flow was a beautiful way of creating a book in enjoyment and delight.
Adam and Vanessa Jean got together on the weekend of the summer solstice with their collection of oils and a voice recorder. They imagined they were teaching a class and just let the ideas flow – saying out loud everything that came to mind as they smelt each oil, connected with it, and remembered what they knew about it.
They enjoyed the process so much, they ended up recording until 2am that first night!
After spending a weekend making these recordings, they sent them off to be transcribed.
Once the transcript of their conversations came back, Adam took on the task of editing and condensing that text into the right format for chapters in a book.
During this phase, the focus was really on combining each of their voices into one consistent voice, so that each chapter was only about the oil and readers wouldn’t be distracted by the text switching tones.
This is where it is so important to hire an editor, because you need that outside perspective to effectively create a consistent tone and structure in the book.
Who this approach is good for…
This approach is good for anyone who already has all the knowledge they need for a book and wants to enjoy and find pleasure in the writing process. Adam and Vanessa Jean were able to get the material for their first draft recorded in just one weekend because they found a way of writing that really worked for them.
You don’t want to push yourself to get it done so fast if you’re not enjoying the process, because the quality of what you write won’t be as good.
Why would you do it this way?
You can only reach a limited number of people with classes.
Writing this book allows Adam and Vanessa Jean to reach an infinite number of people with their unique approach to oils. They can reach people beyond the classroom.
Adam already travels the country and the world teaching. Now he can extend his reach on the subjects in this book, and hear from people who’ve read the book how it has deeply impacted their lives.
How many people could be impacted by the knowledge you have to share, if you write that book?
