Surfacing and Pack Light, Travel Light, Be the Light
new adult fiction
relationships // coming of age // adventure
Tiffany Manchester is a new adult fiction author who writes coming of age stories inspired by her world travels and personal journey.
Both her debut book Surfacing and second book Pack Light, Travel Light, Be the Light take readers through the highs and lows of relationships as her relatable main characters confront their demons and transform their lives.
There’s nothing Tiff likes better than writing (and reading) stories that are both heartrending and humorous, with a touch of cute romance and a poignant streak of truth running through them.
Check out our conversation about her journey to being a fiction author.
In short, here's what we did with Tiff's books.
What was the problem?
Being a first-time fiction author is super daunting, especially when your inspiration is... YOU! Although all fiction writers are inspired by their own experiences, Tiff had to tread carefully so as not to wander too much into creative non-fiction or even memoir territory.
How she solved it
As most authors will tell you, using outside eyes to gain perspective is absolutely invaluable.
Although Tiff didn't want to engage an editor too early, she took her time and paced her self-edits, then put the word out to her network to get some feedback.
This helped her step out of her own experiences and build a well-considered character.
Why would you do it this way?
Tiff does several rounds of self-edits to get her book in the best shape possible. She takes the plunge with editing when she's already done a lot of work so that she can maximise our time together and challenge herself.
This is great for writers who are ambitious and want to up their game in a big way, but who also don't have time pressure around releasing their book - because good books take time.
About the author
Tiffany Manchester writes Contemporary Fiction with "emotional intensity and heart-pounding adventure." There’s nothing she likes better than writing (and reading) stories that are both heartrending and humorous, with a touch of cute romance and a poignant streak of truth running through them.
When she’s not writing or dreaming up new stories and poems, you can find Tiffany flailing about on her surfboard (while reminiscing about her former life as a professional kayaker - when she was ‘really good at something’), traveling on new adventures with her partner or binge-watching high school romcoms in her tropical Hawaiian home and otherwise doing her best not to leave the house.
About the book
Tish, 23, freshly home from Africa is already seeking her next adventure. She is sick of the city, the tight grip of mainstream society, and her disapproving parents. There has to be more people like her out there. But who are they? And where?
Desperate to find her people, she heads out into the Canadian wilderness where she discovers the thrill of being on the river and the challenge of navigating whitewater armed only with a paddle and her fellow rafters. Little does she know it will be the spark lighting the way to new, often harrowing adventures.
Along with her constant companion Red Fran, she finds herself avoiding death on her moped in Taipei, getting lost hiking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, being stuck
in the jungle in Ecuador for three days with nothing but two mangos and a bottle of rum, and tackling the craziest rapid yet in Uganda... as well as finding the love of her life.
But the biggest adventure of all? Having to face her true Self, and her fears, every step of the way.
PACK LIGHT, TRAVEL LIGHT, BE THE LIGHT
I really love this part of the process!
Once I start working on the edits, it's hard to stop.
I can't wait to dive in again!
